Odds and Ends

______________________________________________

Many of you seem to have a lot of questions about guides and what it’s like to work with them.  Here’s what I’ve learned.

Most people choose their guides before they come into body; it’s an agreement between both parties.  Your guides are souls with whom you’re compatible.  You may have been incarnated together in past lives.  The guide relationship is complex and a relaxed working relationship is very important.  There must be a mutual bond of trust and respect before we enter our physical bodies.

Guides start working with us before birth so that the connection is comfortable on this side for us.  They are with us for so long they begin to feel like a part of us, literally. It makes the work easier as most people are afraid of ghosts. Our guides agree to stay with us throughout our entire life even if we finish our work with them early.  This prevents us from feeling an overwhelming loss for seemingly no reason.  It’s very rare, and very difficult, to get a new guide part way through a life.  Chances are they were just waiting for you to tackle a particular set of issues.

I grew up with two main guides.  The first was a beautiful lady with deep turquoise eyes and a laughing face who showed me how to gather my strength and work through my personal issues. Now, because I see spirit and can consciously relate to the process, I’ve had guest guides from time to time. They have come in to tackle tense, but quickly dealt with, issues. They consider 2 years quick, others might argue that 2 years can be an eternity, but I guess it’s all in your perspective.

I will note however that I am careful, you might even say defensive, about who I allow into my energy.  It’s not an easy process and I have to be sure of their intent.  I rely on my constant guides and on my Angels for assurance that I am not making an unwise choice.  Even with these visiting friends there is always a previous agreement to work together, their energy is of the highest intent and we are compatible in frequency.  In spirit or body you should always choose your teachers carefully with awareness of what you are doing and at what cost. Angels, if we let them, will also keep an eye on who enters and exits our energies.

As a child whenever I closed my eyes I would always see this framed old picture of a man with a big moustache.  It looked like a photo taken back when photography was new; the kind of picture you see in a big oval wood frame, faded with time and discoloured by the sepia ink. It had yellowed with time.  He was always there looking at me. I used to talk to the lady but he was just a man in a frame.  He was my second guide.

By the age of 10 I was actively searching. I was reading everything I could get my hands on from witchcraft books to Edgar Cayce. I was meditating and playing with the tarot. Yes, I know, weird kid.

Anyway, I closed my eyes one day and the guy was gone, it was a shock I still remember, he was always there, he still is.  I called to him in a bit of a panic and closed my eyes searching in the dark for him.  His frame appeared first but instead of his face I saw the back of his head.  I called again.  This time he turned to look at me as if to say, “What?”  It was the first time he had ever moved.  Did that freak me out!  I was about to begin my work with Guide #2.

All those years of seeing him in my mind’s eye made it easier to connect with him then.

I have called him by different names of my choosing over the years but his answer is always the same.  In spirit there are no names.  You simply think of that person’s essence and they are there. A name creates limits and bias by its very existence. Think about whom Bruce, Sylvia, Henry or Ralph might be.  Based on previous experience we always have a bias.  It becomes something that must be overcome before the work can begin.

My guides have chosen to remain nameless instead.  It was weird at first but now it’s just the way it is.  In hindsight I can see that it pushed me to communicate in the language of spirit and to develop the sensory perceptions.

Sometimes I will be reading for a client and a guide will instruct me to give the client their name.  It makes me want to stick my tongue out at my guide and say, “See this one’s got a name.”  I realize, however, that sometimes a name is enough to build and strengthen that vital connection.  I was lucky enough to have the visual, they are lucky enough to get a name.  My guides would like to add that it doesn’t matter what name you choose to call your guide by, they will be joyful for the communication itself.

So, usually I refer to the guy in the frame as “My Guide” as he is the one I talk about most often.  The funny thing is, I don’t really think of him as my guide. When I need answers, it’s always the lady that I go to for direction and advice.  “My Guide” refuses to work with me on my issues because “our channel must remain clear.”  He answers spiritual questions, we engage in debate frequently (don’t bother arguing with a guide as they always win anyway!) and the work I do with clients is directed through him. We even write together when I give him the chance.  He is my dearest friend and my greatest soul mate, I am sure.  He can also be very ironic in a funny sarcastic kind of way that has kept my feet on the ground, I hope.

I was working on my boat a few summers back sanding down the teak toe rails on my steel boat.  You have to understand that as much as I love the water, and I really do, sometimes it freaks me out.  I think I was eaten by something with sharp teeth in a past life and every once in a while I feel like I might be a light snack.  I was sanding away and My Guide said to me, “Something in the water’s going to get you.”

I looked at him and said, “Yeah, right” and kept sanding.  I was in our slip.  I highly doubted Jaws was circling, so I kept working. “Something in the water’s going to get you,” he said again.

I kept sanding, 2 or 3 minutes went by and he’s still repeating the phrase, I think he’s just being a smart*** because I know he enjoys a good joke.  Finally, as he’s practically yelling at me, I put the sander down and got up to take a closer look.

There in the water, is most of my extension cord including the end where I have plugged in the sander. I look at it and My Guide says “See, something in the water’s going to get you.  You can’t say I never give you advice about your life anymore.”

I guess you can have fun learning because both my guides use humor to keep me on my toes.  I don’t think I could relate to someone who was always straight-laced and serious about everything.  It’s a reminder to me why I love my guides so much, they just take it all in flow with joy.
