Odds and Ends

______________________________________________

We build special bonds with our pets due in part to their ability to love and accept us. They do have souls similar to our own but I do not believe that we have ever been animals.

Animals serve a very high purpose on this plane. Throughout history there has always been talk of familiars around gifted people. The witch’s cat or the sorcerer’s owl. These stories are no coincidence. Animals have the ability to choose to serve a particular human in their cycle of growth.

We see this every day in the eyes of the devoted family dog or cat. We may not be aware enough to truly develop that relationship but it stands as one of intense support, love, and consistency. How many times has a pet been there to help you through an overwhelming emotional  challenge?

A soul cannot survive alone without others for support. We have guides and Angels, but we also have pets as a conscious physical outlet for our love.

Animals have the ability to live in the physical and spirit realms simultaneously. They can see spirit so crossing over holds little fear for them. It is the impact of their dying on the ones they love that can cause  them trauma. This empathy for others is why so many cats and dogs go away from their family and pack to die. They have no fear. They would rather starve themselves than live in pain. Remember that it’s us who have the hang ups with death, not our pets.

If your pet is sick and in a lot of pain and your vet feels the best thing to do is let your loved one go, let them go. If you really love your pet they will feel it and they will be okay. To torture yourself wondering if they hate you for setting them free is only going to cause them, and you, distress.

It is not uncommon for a dead pet to continue living with the ones they love in the family home after they have passed. They still sleep on your bed and sit in the sun by the windows. Their commitment to you does not end with death.

If you are faced with the most difficult task of putting down your pet consider these suggestions:

Sit someplace quiet with your pet and tell them how much you love them and appreciate all they have brought into your life. Explain that you want them to be free from pain and that they are just going to go to sleep for a while.

If you can keep the physical body close that’s fine but it doesn’t really matter. When my dog passed we left his crate set up for a week or two just in case he needed time adjusting. I know that may sound silly. We still talk to him when we catch a glimpse out of the corner of our eye or feel the covers move a bit. But we do not dwell on our pet all of the time as healing for us is very important.

You do not need to feel guilty for doing what is best for a pet, you do not need to worry that if you move they will be lost. It really is okay. Your challenge will be to open up and love again.

I hope this helps some of you as I have had so many clients lately truly devastated by the loss of a pet.
